In 2021, the Hellenic Republic celebrates the 200th anniversary of the uprising of Greek revolutionaries against the Ottoman Occupation in the Greek War of Independence. From 1821-1832, Greek revolutionaries fought the War to secure their homeland, their people, and their culture, at the cost of entire communities across the Aegean Sea and Peloponnese.
An international calendar of events has been endorsed by the Greek Government to acknowledge this anniversary. In South Australia, the Foundation for Hellenic Studies launched Gr2021 as the promotional platform for events commemorating this anniversary. Community groups and individual organisers from around Australia are invited to send their details and event information to email@example.com for inclusion on the website.
By George! Biennial Art Prize
The Foundation for Hellenic Studies announces the launch of a “By George!”, a biennial art prize commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence.
Encouraging discussion about independence; its effect on humanity, and the sacrifices made for it through the years, the Art Prize will be judged by a panel of acclaimed artists and critics led by Mr Jason Karas. Prize winners will be announced at a public exhibition opening on 2 July 2021, in the St George College Art Gallery.
