It’s particularly significant that confirmation was received on Greek Independence Day – a day that commemorates the war fought between 1821 and 1832 to secure Greece’s independence, its culture and identity for generations to come.

With Chief Justice Kourakis at its helm, the Foundation for Hellenic Studies is developing an exciting calendar of events to continue celebrating and sharing the gems of Hellenic culture with all Australians through events, experiences and educational opportunities.

Almost 250 guests crowded the Adelaide Pavilion on Thursday 7th November for the South Australian Book Launch of “Call me Emilios” by Justice Emilios Kyrou of the Supreme Court of Victoria followed by the Great Debate: Greeks do it Better. MC George Kapiniaris introduced Greg Crafter AO, Chair of the Foundation for Hellenic Studies; the Ambassador for Greece Haris Dafaranos; and Michael Abbott AO QC as Moderator for the Debate before taking his place as third speaker for the Negative team. His colleagues Hon Amanda Vanstone (Captain) and Hon Tom Koutsantonis staged a brave battle against the Affirmative team led by the Hon Marie Vamvakinou, Hon Nick Xenophon and Costas (“The Gardener”) Georgiadis, but the Foundation’s own Supreme Court comprising Chief Justice Chris Kourakis of the Supreme Court of South Australia, Justice Emilios Kyrou of the Supreme Court of Victoria and the audience, declared the Affirmative Team the winners of the Debate.

A copy of the Ambassador’s speech can be found here: Greeks do it better by Amb Haris Dafaranos.
